It means asking questions, hypothesizing, testing, and trying again (and again, and again, and again). It may even mean failing. But – when you get to the answer, it’s so rewarding. Thanksgiving Point serves as a place for kids to get curious about science and the natural world. In the discovery centers at Thanksgiving Point, you’ll see curious kids growing every day. After falling in love with this wonder world, we purchased six ponies for their Curiosity Farms and supplied funds for their Every Kid Counts program that offers free admission to WIC and SNAP families and children from the following organizations: Big Brothers & Big Sisters, Utah School for the Deaf & Blind, United Way, Utah Foster Care, Children's Service Society of Utah, Make a Wish Foundation, Autism Council of Utah.</image:caption>

<image:title>Projects - Shy Wolf Sanctuary</image:title>
<image:caption>From the first moment Dr. Kellogg arrived at the Shy Wolf Sanctuary Education and Experience Center in Naples, Florida, he was intrigued by what he saw. “When I went into the first enclosure, the wolf was very inquisitive, but he also stared at me in a way I didn’t under- stand,” Dr. Kellogg says. “The staff told me that intense staring is how wolves show dominance.” Since its founding in 2001, the sanctuary has rescued more than 1,300 animals and educated tens of thousands of people about the needs of surrendered, abused, and captive-bred exotic animals. For them, Shy Wolf is literally their last hope. Dr. Kellogg had the opportunity to name two wolf dogs that had just arrived at the sanctuary: Kellogg, after his family, and Scout, after their lifelong involvement with scouting. “Shy Wolf has a long history of partnering with the Scouts on projects, so this name was a perfect choice,” he notes. Dr. Kellogg says he learned from his parents to support people like Nancy Smith, the sanctuary’s founder, who are passionate about a cause. The foundation’s gift built a new wolf lodge that provides a more natural and enriching setting. “We look for people who start small and turn their cause into something bigger than themselves,” Dr. Kellogg states. “Nancy has certainly done that. She’s had the drive to overcome obstacles, and she gives credit to the staff and volunteers that make Shy Wolf a model for other sanctuaries around the country.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Projects - LACASA: Nurturing Parenting - Ongoing support of parenting education</image:title>
<image:caption>The Kellogg Family Foundation, the sole sponsor of LACASA’s Nurturing Parenting, Fathers Only, and Parenting 2.0: Surviving the Teen Years, has kept these courses up and running for 13 years and counting. Bobette Schrandt, LACASA’s president, and CEO says that without the foundation’s ongoing support, her agency couldn’t provide education programs like this to families in Livingston County. Jan Lobur couldn’t agree more. “Because the foundation believes in parenting education, more than 1,000 moms and dads have learned how to be better parents. What an important legacy the Kellogg Family Foundation will leave for children and families.” Dr. Kellogg says the impact is far beyond what he expected. “We continue to hear of the amazing ways people’s lives have been changed for the better.” LACASA’s parenting programs are offered throughout the year. For the latest schedule and registration information, call Jan Lobur at 517-548-1350 or email parenting@lacasacenter.org.</image:caption>

<image:title>Projects - LACASA: Nurturing Parenting - Learning to be a more confident parent</image:title>
<image:caption>What does it take to be a good mom? That’s what Kassie Green, mother of a two-year-old toddler, wanted to know. Her son was at the age that isn’t called the “terrible twos” for nothing. “I consider myself a pretty great mom, but I sometimes felt like a failure. If I mess up today, then years from now, what will my son turn out to be? I always have questions, so I figured it would help to learn more,” she says. Kassie’s not alone. There’s no instruction manual for raising children, and every parent wonders if they’re doing the best job possible. Dr. Thomas Kellogg, who built a successful dental practice in Howell, had similar doubts. So he sought out help from the Fathers Only program at LACASA, nonprofit serving families in Livingston County. The course teaches fathers, stepfathers, and male caregivers how to be positive role models in their sons’ and daughters’ lives. His instructor was Jan Lobur, a parenting educator at LACASA for over 20 years. Her practical, real-world approach was just what Dr. Kellogg was looking for.</image:caption>

<image:title>Projects - Charity Bicycles - The Kellogg Family Foundation helps get wheels to those in need</image:title>
<image:caption>“As a kid, my bike gave me the freedom to be on my own, and learning to take care of it built my self-confidence.” — Dr. Thomas Kellogg Charity Bicycles, a full-service bicycle repair and retail shop at 9903 Weber Street in Brighton, started out with a few bikes in mechanic Dave Wolfe’s garage. With the help of his wife, Judy, and many skilled volunteers, the non-profit has grown exponentially, donating more than 400 bikes in 2022. Free bicycles go to families who can’t afford bikes for their kids, to adults with no other means of transportation, and to many others. Charity Bicycles works hand in hand with local bike shops that donate late-model customer trade-ins that the agency refurbishes to give away or sell. The success of this mutually beneficial partnership drew the attention of Dr. Thomas Kellogg. In 2022, a major gift established state-of-the-art Kellogg Foundation Repair and Training Centers in Brighton, Flint, and Detroit. These free programs train volunteers to repair bikes to be given away, as well as people who want to learn to fix their own bikes. Charity Bicycles’ effect is far-reaching. “We work with Livingston County groups who distribute bikes to families, kids in foster care or a shelter, to schools, and to people just released from prison,” Dave Wolfe says. “Wherever there’s a hardship, we try to help.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>“The Kellogg Family Room is a friendly, fun place for children in the foster care system and their parents to spend time together. For children who have experienced trauma, it’s an exceptionally warm and safe environment.” — Julie Amman Livingston County Catholic Charities aims to foster family reunification whenever possible, but their old location wasn’t family-friendly. When they moved to a new site, they needed money to refurbish a new visitation and living room—which is where the foundation came in. We outfitted the new visitation space to make it more welcoming and homey. Now, when parents have supervised visitation, they can go to the Kellogg Family Suite to meet and share meals with their kids rather than having to go offsite.</image:caption>

<image:title>Projects - Camp Kellogg - Free, fun camp for kids to experience nature</image:title>
<image:caption>Any Boy Scout or Cub Scout troop can come here and camp free of charge.” — Jim Gelinas, Camp Ranger Edward and June Kellogg had a passion for scouting. They led and donated to Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops for many decades, providing equipment for the scouts’ community service projects. In 2003, they realized their lifelong dream by founding Camp Kellogg, a free, fun camp for kids who aren’t able to go camping and experience nature. Their 230-acre retreat in Kalkaska, funded solely by the foundation, is managed by the Kalkaska Methodist Church. Open year-round, the camp has 10 tent sites, indoor bathrooms, heated showers, and multi-use pavilions; new features are added each year. Two cabins let parents enjoy their stay while their kids are at camp. The foundation has also partnered with the Boy Scouts of America for more than a decade and purchased a new trailer for Troop 336 in Fowlerville. The new trailer provides storage for tents, travel kitchens, dining areas, and scout gear for camping adventures.</image:caption>

The foundation donated $18,500 to its Touching Lives program, a lending library of technology to help students in the elementary and middle grades. Studies show that autistic children using Touch Pad technology can actually surpass non-autistic children in skills. Graduates of these programs are leaders in fields such as marketing, management, and graphic design. So we brought back the century-old idea of libraries being the center of the community, and have provided seed funds to build a future-forward, $15 million community library in the center of town. To support local businesses, we’ve also spruced up downtown Kalkaska with permanent pots of colorful flowers and other streetscape features.</image:caption>

We provide support in several ways: Kits help young children learn basic STEM skills and how to calm down when they’re angry. This is particularly important if the child comes from a home where parents have trouble controlling their own emotions and behavior. <image:title>Projects - Free Dental Day - Dental care straight from the heart</image:title>
<image:caption>“I’ve never seen a dental office with more smiles.” — Christina W. Free Dental Day brings together dentists, doctors, hygienists, assistants, nurses, and volunteers to provide free cleanings, fillings, and extractions for people without dental insurance who can- not afford the care they need. The fun, annual event is complete with music, dancing, and a bouncy house for kids. Community donations provide food and prizes. Area churches and social organizations also help: free breakfast and lunch are served by Love INC and Livingston County Veterans. Each year our efforts grow. We treat an average of 150 patients, an effort requiring over 60 volunteers. A dental problem can keep someone from leaving their house, unable to work or socialize. Over the years, our screenings have identified life-threatening, health issues such as morbid blood pressure and dangerously uncontrolled diabetes. These patients were personally escorted to our hospital next door, taking the next step toward better health.</image:caption>

The foundation purchased a building that now serves as the Livingston County Red Cross headquarters, free of charge. We also partnered with the Red Cross in Save One Life, which provided CPR, first aid, and AED training for 10,000 students, teachers, and coaches in Livingston County schools. High school teachers aren’t required to be CPR trained, and most high school students don’t know CPR either. <image:caption>“Testimonial to come here.” — Jennifer Rice, Great Commision Air The foundation has worked with Operation Gratitude and M.O.S.T. Ministries for more than a decade, making grants of over $250,000 to support dental and missionary clinics in underserved parts of the world. These agencies are set up in remote locations and provide medical and dental professionals to staff the clinics. Partnering in this effort is Commission Air, based in Dundee, Michigan, which makes relief flights to provide emergency support to remote villages in Central and South America. The agency also trains future missionary pilots and is rewarded for seeing the impact of its efforts on the lives of struggling families. To learn more, visit GreatCommissionAir.org.</image:caption>

<image:title>Projects - Medical Scholarship - Doctoring in a remote Guatemalan village where mothers, children and the elderly are at highest risk</image:title>
<image:caption>David and fellow students travel to small towns to provide medical services alongside doctors. Imagine you are a Guatemalan boy with dreams of becoming a doctor. You live in a shack with a dirt floor and no indoor plumbing. Chickens and dogs share your family’s home. Students bring machetes to school to cut through brush and ward off snakes. A missionary couple living nearby realizes you are a promising student and arranges a sponsorship for you to attend a college-prep missionary school in the mountains, a day’s trip from your home. After nearly two years of studying day and night, you’re ready for medical school—but with no way to afford it. The foundation partnered 50/50 with Great Commission Air to co-sponsor a medical school scholarship, an extension of its ministry, to improve the quality of life for people of Mayan descent in rural Guatemala.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“The Kellogg Family Foundation will help make a transformational vision become a reality. Their support was critical to us receiving a grant of more than $600,000 from the state of Michigan.” — John Boris, Recycle Livingston Founded in 1989, Recycle Livingston is the county’s only nonprofit recycling center. The agency promotes recycling to reduce waste in local landfills and has expanded its capabilities to include many hard-to-recycle items. The Kellogg Family Foundation is a major supporter, donating $171,000 to help secure a permanent building and more advanced equipment for Recycle Livingston’s processing center. Donations from community members are welcomed and will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the foundation. Please designate your tax-deductible donation to the New Building Fund. <image:title>Projects - Livingston County Veterans Memorial - Honoring those who have served and sacrificed for our country</image:title>
<image:caption>Livingston County Veterans, led by WW II veteran Louis VanCuyle, set out in 2013 to raise funds to remodel and expand the aging Livingston County Veterans Memorial. The group teamed up with Dr. Thomas Kellogg to hold a fundraiser at his dental campus on Flag Day. The foundation matched donations dollar-for-dollar, doubling the amount raised. There was such an outpouring of support that the initial $10,000 match was met within an hour. So The Kellogg Foundation kept doubling the challenge until a total of $46,000 was raised, enough to completely fund the renovation. The foundation was honored to be a part of a community-wide dedication attended by over 1,000 people, a moving occasion to honor the soldiers who have served us and protected our country.</image:caption>
